Thousands turn out to support the Saltdean Lido Campaign - more news and photos here
Saltdean’s first ever fun day and outdoor concert took place on Saturday attracting visitors of around 5,000 people throughout the day. The evening concert which was sold out saw Paul Zenon, The Bobby McGees and The Brighton Beach Boys play to an audience of 475 people. The event was organised by the Save Saltdean Lido Campaign to help raise awareness of their campaign to protect and restore Saltdean Lido and to help with fundraising for the campaign.
The day’s event provided something for everyone with over 100 people bringing their dogs to have a go on the dog agility course provided by The Dog Hut. Hundreds of children tried the Orb360 activities whilst the arts and crafts and food stalls proved popular too. The bar which was operated by the Friends of Saltdean Lido provided ales from local breweries Hammerpot & Hepworth and ciders from Middle Farm, some of which sold out before the evening event even started!
The event was officially opened by the Brighton & Hove Mayor, Anne Matthews with the Brighton Men’s Choir launching the day’s entertainment stage with their specially written song all about the campaign to save Saltdean Lido.
Rebecca Crook, Chairperson, of the campaign says; ‘The event far surpassed our expectations with regards to the turn out which was fantastic and it really was a spectacular day with a great atmosphere. Saltdean Park has never been that full before so we hope it sends out a clear signal that the local community are all behind the campaign.’ Rebecca goes onto say; ‘The day really wouldn’t have been possible without all the local people who volunteered and helped on the day, local businesses who have provided tremendous support, the generous raffle prize donations we’ve received and our sponsors Yeomans Brighton, Carruthers & Luck, Conran & Partners & Barefoot Wines whom we’d like to thank.’
Local Rottingdean Coastal Councillor Mary Mears goes on to say; ‘The Summer Fun Day at Saltdean Park, was fantastic. Everyone I spoke to said they were really enjoying the event, put on by the Friends of Saltdean Lido. It was wonderful to see so many residents and families’ young and old having such a great time. Congratulation to everyone who made the day possible it was an outstanding success’.
Rebecca, confirms that they intend to make this an annual event and news of how much was raised from the event will be published on their website later this month. www.saltdeanlidocampaign.org
